Foreigner Identity Card (TIE)

The Foreigner Identity Card is the unique and exclusive, personal and non-transferable document. It accredits foreigners a legal stay in Spain for a period of more than six months.

The children or represented minors who are not emancipated or incapacitated may appear on the Card corresponding to the father, mother or legal representative. It is possible that they may be holders of an independent document.

The foreigner who is in Spanish territory has the right and the obligation to keep, in force, the documentation that proves his identity, issued by the competent authorities of the country of origin or provenance, as well as that which proves his situation in Spain. He may not be deprived of his documentation except in the cases and with the requirements set forth in Organic Law 4/2000, of January 11, and in Organic Law 4/2015, of March 30, on the protection of citizen security.

Failure to comply with the obligations relating to the Foreigner Identity Card will entail the application of the sanctioning regime provided for in Organic Law 4/2000, of January 11, on the rights and freedoms of foreigners in Spain and their social integration.

Foreign ID request

You can obtain an identity card for foreigners if:

A visa or authorization has been issued to stay in Spain for a period exceeding six months.

The legal situation of the identity card holder has been modified or altered, or their employment situation including the renewal of the authorization.

Their identity card has been stolen, lost, destroyed or rendered useless.

Documentation

Application form in official form (EX – 17) in duplicate, duly completed and signed by the foreigner.

Proof of payment of the card fee.

Accreditation of affiliation and / or registration with Social Security, if applicable.

A recent color photograph, on a white background, passport size.

Where appropriate, report the loss or theft, or presentation of the disabled card.

Note: in general, copies of the documents must be provided and the originals must be exhibited at the time of submitting the application.

Subject entitled to submit the application:

The foreigner personally.

Place of presentation:

At the Immigration Office or at the Police Station of the province where the authorization that recognizes the right or is authorized to remain in Spain has been processed.

Deadline for submission:

One month from entry into Spain or from when the authorization is granted or becomes effective or, where appropriate, from the moment the card was stolen, lost, destroyed or rendered useless.

Fees for issuing the identity card:

The amount of the fee depends on the authorization that documents the card. They may be:

  • Model 012 “Card that documents the first granting of the authorization of temporary residence, stay or workers
  • Form 012 “Card that documents the renewal or extension of the authorization of temporary residence, extension of stay or of cross-border workers”.
  • Model 012 “Card that documents the residence and work authorization for exceptional circumstances
  • Model 012 “Card that documents the authorization of long-term residence or long-term residence-EU

Validity period

The identity card will have the same validity period as the authorization or recognition of the right that justifies its issuance, and will lose its validity when the authorization is issued.

Deliver the foreigner identity card

To deliver the foreigner identity card, the interested party must prove that they are the recipient of the document and have paid the established fees.

Exempt from the obligation

Holders of a residence and seasonal work permit are exempt from the obligation to apply for a foreigner’s identity card.
