we want to talk about the most important concept for a foreigner in Spain: the NIE. This number is the tax identification for a person who does not have Spanish nationality. The NIE is granted when the foreigner wants to make some type of transaction, study or work in Spain and therefore has to pay a tax or fee in the country. Let’s make it clear that having a NIE does not mean that you can reside in Spain legally since this requires other procedures such as the application for the CUE or TIE card.
The
NIE
will be your Spanish tax identification number issued by the authorities in Spain or by the Spanish consulate in your country of origin.

CUE.
Citizens of a Member State of the European Union, of another State part to the Agreement on the European Economic Area or Switzerland, who are going to reside in the territory of the Spanish State for a period exceeding three months, are obliged to request their registration in the Central Registry of Foreigners.
Foreigner Identity Card
TIE.
This identity document is issued to foreigners from countries outside the European Union.
